The action genre is the widest gaming genre out there, just because almost every game fits in this category. And picking 10 games out of all those games is hard because there is a lot of awesome games that I could suggest for anyone to try out if they have not played it yet. And placing them in a list was even harder, as every single one of these games is awesome, and deciding where to put them was probably the hardest task.
1. Red Dead Redemption
Released: 18 May 2010
Available on: Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3
One of the best games from Rockstar, Red Dead Redemption places you in old western, following the main protagonist John Marston. John is a former outlaw, and his past has caught up with him, and his family is kidnapped by the government as a ransom for his services. I felt that the game itself is kind of unique because it is set in an open world western. The map itself feels big, and most of it due to limitations of that time transportation. Just like the old days you can only move around on foot, various types of horses and trains, and with weapons, its nothing new as you will be only able to use revolvers, shotguns, rifles and everything else from that time. Something unique is the morality meter, which makes you consider your actions as you might be the hero or the villain of the world, and the world will change the way they act with you due to your own choices. I can say such a thing rarely, but Red Dead Redemption is a must buy not only for western fans but for everyone.

2. Grand Theft Auto V
Released: 17 September 2013
Available on: Xbox 360/One, Windows, PlayStation 3 and 4
Second in our list is probably the most popular game in the last ten years, the Grand Theft Auto V. With interesting singleplayer storyline, beautiful visuals, a lot of options on what to do and big free roam opportunities is not the real reason why the game is such a hit. Although this is only my option, I believe this game is worth to purchase to do its multiplayer capabilities.
Starting from adversaries mode, stunt races, and heist setups, online offers so much to do. And as multiplayer still getting new DLCs in time to time there is no real limit on what to do, and that is why I like the game so much, cause with even several hundred hours of gameplay on it, you still probably won’t be bored by this game. So, if you still do not own GTA V, I would suggest buying it, because you will be able to get a lot of hours in this game and most of them will be really fun.
3. Gears Of War 2
Released: 7 November 2008
Available on: Xbox 360
Following the success of GOW series first entry, Marcus Fenix and the humanity is again battling a losing fight against the Locust Horde. With great visuals from UN engine, the game offers a good story in the campaign, offering drop-in/out co-op mode, and smarter AI than before. With added difficulty levels, like Insane difficulty which you can unlock after completing the story the first time, so you can go back again this time with some serious struggle.
With good looking enemies, and a wide variety of them including a lot of old ones, like Brumaks, you probably will have some struggle against them, and this time you have an option to even ride a Brumak and Reaver into battle in some time while playing singleplayer, two moments that I really enjoyed.
But the gem of the game is the multiplayer mode, with added new weapons, modes and adjusted battle mechanic the game offers some really awesome multiplayer battles and of course some chainsaw assassinations and battles making it even more gruesome.
4. Mass Effect 2
Released: 26 January 2010
Available on: Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Windows
Mass Effect 2 is probably the best way to describe how to mix a shooter with RPG elements, in a large area. The second entry in Mass Effect trilogy you will continue the story of Commander Shepard and his battle to save the galaxy from alien threat once again, this time from The Collectors, who are abducting entire human colonies to make their army.
With a lot of characters and a huge map to play on you will definitely spend some time traveling, running and interacting with different characters to ensure that you end the game with 100% completion. And you should do these things, to ensure that you end the game with a lot of things done, because your choices in the game will impact the world, and your crew around you, and of course it will impact Mass Effect 3 if you import the save. With tons of little side quests and things to do aside from the main story, you will have a lot to do in this game.
5. Halo 4
Released: 6 November 2012
Available on: Xbox 360 and Xbox One
What would an Xbox 360 Action game Top 10 be without its most famous exclusive game, and I believe that Halo 4 is perfect for this. Although there will be some disagreement with me from others, I really liked this one.
Halo 4 is a sequel to 3rd installment and follows 4 years after its story, as Master Chief is in woken from cryonic sleep and needs to battle covenant and Promethean forces, and the Didact, an ancient Forerunner warrior to save the humanity in UNSC Infinity. The game itself looks beautiful even in these times, the music in the game again is picked and created just perfectly, fitting every situation you will be in the best it could and the game runs really smoothly.
But the most interesting part is obviously the multiplayer part of the game, offering various types of gameplay, weapons, and designs. If you want to start something, I advise you to check out this game.
6. Far Cry 3
Released: 29 November 2012
Available on: Xbox 360, Windows and PlayStation 3
Far Cry 3 is the third game in Far Cry series, and the best one in my view (as Far Cry 5 has not yet been released). Far Cry 3 is not a game where its vast open world, beautiful scenery or tons and tons of things to do aside the main story dictates what it is. I felt that it is the characters in the game, what makes it so great because they don`t feel unreal, they feel “alive”.
This makes the game great, because you can relate to some of them, and you see how the main protagonist Jason slowly slips into madness which he created by going on a murder spree. And yes, the game has a lot of exploration available, a lot of looting, crafting that makes a huge part of it too, and the scenery itself is something astonishing. There are a lot of things to talk about in this game, why it is so great, and why it is not, and it will differ in each mind.
But, the story of a game is as good as its villain, and Vaas without a doubt is the best villain you could wish in such a game, as you could feel his instability, personality and he created one of the best quotes in a video game – “Do you know the definition of insanity?”.
7. Borderlands 2
Released: 18 September 2012
Available on: Xbox 360/One, Windows, OS X, PlayStation 3/Vita/4 and Linux
Borderlands 2 is the second entry in Borderland series, and the story takes five years after the first one, with four new vault hunters who have been betrayed by Handsome Jack. The plot itself reveals a lot of things in time, and you will have to do a mission to ensure your victory at the end. I actually believe that there is only one word that can describe Borderlands 2, and that is unique.
The game itself is a perfect mix of FPS and RPG, with a visual design a lot different from other games from that time and really fun gameplay. Visual design is probably the main thing that makes the game series unique from others, with cartoony like visuals. AI in the game itself is in their own way unique too and there is quite a bunch of them.
With a lot of DLCs already out the game offers a lot of hours to play, and it does not seem to bore the player, and with CO-OP options you can absorb the fun with your friends too.
8. Dark Souls 2
Released: 11 March 2014
Available on: Xbox 360/One, Windows, PlayStation 3 and 4
Dark Souls 2 is the predecessor to Dark Souls and uses similar mechanics. Story itself is kind of straight as you are cursed and can`t really die, and your mission is to end that curse, although while the story continuous it changes, but I will not spoil it for those who haven’t played it yet.
With updated graphics, the game looks really grim and dark, in a good way and they look beautiful. With different enemies, and rare loot and heal options you will appreciate every checkpoint you will have, as you will have a lot to lose when dying. The difficulty in the game is what makes it great, probably few were turned away by it, but the satisfaction of defeating a boss or even completing the game it something on its own.
And Dark Souls 2 is the hardest game in this list and probably ever, and with this game the most popular words you will encounter will be You Died.
9. Call Of Duty Modern Warfare 2
Released: 10 November 2009
Available on: Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Windows and OS X
A successor to Modern Warfare, MW2 continuous its plot to fight against Russian ultra-nationalists and several other enemies from various soldier perspectives. The story itself is interesting, and fun with some really cool mission, and one of the most controversial mission of any video game, and yes, I mean the” No Russian” mission.
The audio, and graphics were one of the most beautiful ones when it came out and even looks good at this moment. But just like other games in this list, its gem was the multiplayer, with action-packed, small map fighting, and without doubt, it brings a lot of enjoyment.
With attachments, perks, and killstreaks, the multiplayer was packed with things to do, although they all seemed kind of similar due to you just had to get most points or kills to win, it was still pure fun.
Released: 21 August 2007
Available on: Xbox 360/One, Windows, OS X, PlayStation 3 and 4
Bioshock is one of the unique ones and probably the highest quality game in this list, and one of the hardest to review for me. It is really hard to find words to describe this game, and why you should purchase it. Bioshock allows you to do the impossible in probably the most gorgeous and mysterious world designed. The upgraded Unreal Engine used in Bioshock has one of the best water in a video game I have ever witnessed, and AI that can adapt to the player assures that you will be challenged, and will force you to adapt to survive.
The story itself is hard for me to explain, as it is huge, and I do not know how to really shorten it up, so for that, you will have to check it out, to know it and learn it. Bioshock is one of the games that I can ensure you to get, and which one you will not be disappointed with, although it is in 10th place in this list, this does not mean it’s worse than others, it is just really hard to place these games in a top list.
