Plenty of games have been released through Microsoft’s XBOX Live Arcade, and there are hundreds of great games for the platform. Which are the best, though? We sat down and played through hours of puzzles, hack-n-slash, gore, and comedy; all to bring you 3 great, addictive games available right now. We didn’t count anything released very recently just because we think they need to stand out like these have.

Castle Crashers: The Cutest Hack & Slash Adventure You’ll Ever PlayXbox 360 castle crushers

The fine folks at The Behemoth created one of the greatest experiences a group of friends can have with each other when they concocted Castle Crashers. The game is a nonstop barrage of vibrant colors, constant action, and insanely creative enemies. The game can be played in single-player mode, but once gamers start a multi-player campaign, they’ll soon forget they ever wielded a tiny sword alone.

Players can battle enemies with up to 3 friends in this platform-style hack and slash adventure. There’s no voice acting, it’s repetitious at times, and thumbs may need tending to after a good hour or so of play, but that doesn’t change the fact that Castle Crashers is an awesome experience.

Braid Offers Puzzles And Storytelling For ThinkersBraid Xbox 360 1

When Braid was released, gamers and critics everywhere hailed it as the greatest puzzle-game ever released. With a wonderful meta-story, puzzles that required more thought than trial-and-error, and wonderfully adorable graphics, Braid is one of the greatest experiences a puzzle-gamer can ask for.

Throughout the course of Braid, players control Tim, the main character, on his quest to save a princess. One of the many things Tim seems capable of doing is controlling time; allowing him to reverse actions that would otherwise cause him to fail. But when playing through, metaphors can be gleaned that hint at more. The game could all be in the head of a man going through the end of a failed relationship, for example. There are more metaphors that can be found in Braid, but we’ll leave those for the players.

The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition Brings Swashbuckling Comedy BackSecret of Monkey Island

LucasArts brought the first Monkey Island game to the public in the early 90s. Since then, there have been 3 sequels, and numerous smaller adventures (released online) regaling us with tales of Guybrush Threepwood, wanna-be pirate extraordinaire. Each game is loaded with comedy, great writing, and extremely irreverent puzzles–like feeding a troll a red herring to cross a bridge.

The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition is essentially the first game with updated graphics (though players have the option to switch to Classic view at will), voice-acting added (using the voices fans of the series know and love), and a little cheesy island-music thrown in for good measure.

More Games On XBOX Live Arcade

This selection is just the tip of the iceberg. There are literally hundreds of great games available on XBLA, and new ones are being released all the time. The choices extend far beyond hack-and-slash and puzzle games. There are first-person shooters like Marathon, tile-based puzzle games like Carcassonne, and classic coin-op games like Paperboy. So no matter what a gamers tastes, the Marketplace has something that they’re sure to enjoy.
